We ran the five-year ownership numbers on electric and petrol scooters in India, including battery replacement. The break-even is around 15 km a day here is the full working and what it means for you.

The pro-electric ones quote a running cost of thirty paise per kilometre, multiply it across five years, produce an enormous savings figure, and stop there. The sceptical ones point at battery replacement costs and weak resale values and conclude that petrol still wins.
Both are doing the same thing: picking the numbers that support a conclusion they arrived at first.
This guide takes a different approach. Below is a complete five-year ownership model with every assumption stated openly, including the battery replacement that optimistic comparisons tend to omit. The answer turns out to depend almost entirely on one variable โ how far you ride in a day โ and there is a specific threshold where it flips.
The assumptions
Every cost comparison is only as honest as its assumptions, so here are all of them.
Petrol scooter (110cc class):
- On-road price: โน95,000
- Fuel efficiency: 45 km/l in real conditions
- Petrol: โน105 per litre
- Servicing: โน3,500 per year
- Insurance: โน1,800 per year
Electric scooter (comparable segment):
- On-road price: โน1,25,000 after subsidy
- Electricity cost: โน0.35 per km
- Servicing: โน1,800 per year
- Insurance: โน2,600 per year (higher, because insurance tracks vehicle value)
- Battery replacement provision: โน30,000
Three of these deserve explanation.
Why โน0.35/km and not โน0.09/km. You will see figures as low as nine paise quoted. Those usually reflect the most efficient models under ideal conditions. Across typical scooters at typical residential tariffs of โน7โ9 per unit, โน0.25โ0.40 per km is the realistic band. Using โน0.35 keeps this comparison conservative โ if your scooter does better, the electric case only strengthens.
Why include battery replacement at all. Published replacement estimates vary enormously, from roughly โน20,000 to over โน50,000 depending on capacity and chemistry, and pack prices have been falling around 8โ10% a year. Many owners sell before ever needing one. But leaving it out entirely is how optimistic comparisons inflate their savings. โน30,000 is a mid-range provision.
Why electric insurance is higher. Premiums scale with insured value, and electric scooters generally cost more. Note that the third-party component is actually cheaper for electric two-wheelers under the notified rate structure โ it is the own-damage portion that pushes the total up.
The five-year numbers
Petrol running cost works out to โน2.33 per km against โน0.35 per km for electric โ a saving of โน1.98 for every kilometre you ride.
That per-kilometre gap is the entire argument. Everything else is fixed cost working against it.
Here is the five-year total for each, at different daily distances:

Read the first row carefully. At 10 km a day, the electric scooter costs about โน19,000 more over five years. Not less. More.
That is the row the enthusiastic comparisons leave out.
The break-even point
The upfront and fixed-cost disadvantage of going electric โ higher purchase price, higher insurance, plus the battery provision, minus lower servicing โ comes to โน55,500 in this model.
Divide that by the โน1.98 saved per kilometre and you get the break-even:
Approximately 28,000 km โ about 15 km a day over five years.
Below that, petrol is cheaper. Above it, electric pulls ahead, and the gap widens fast.
If you never need a battery replacement โ which many owners do not, particularly with LFP chemistry or if you sell before year six โ the break-even drops to around 12,900 km, roughly 7 km a day. That is the optimistic scenario, and it is a legitimate one for many buyers.
So the honest answer is a range: the crossover sits somewhere between 7 and 15 km a day, depending on whether you end up replacing the battery.
What this means at the monthly level
The five-year totals are abstract. The monthly energy bill is what you actually feel:

This is the number owners notice first, and it is genuinely large at higher usage. At 30 km a day you are keeping roughly โน1,785 a month that used to go into a fuel tank.
But note that at 10 km a day, โน595 a month does not repay a โน30,000 higher purchase price quickly.
Where petrol still wins
Cost is not the only axis, and there are situations where petrol remains clearly the better choice.
You cannot charge where you park. This is the single biggest disqualifier, and no amount of running-cost saving fixes it. If your scooter sits in a basement or a shared compound with no accessible socket, an electric scooter with a fixed battery becomes a daily problem. Removable-battery models exist for exactly this case โ but a battery pack is heavy, and carrying one up three flights every night gets old quickly. Settle this question before choosing a model.
You ride short distances. Under roughly 15 km a day, the maths does not support the switch on cost grounds. It may still be worth it for quietness, lower servicing hassle, or emissions โ but do not tell yourself you are saving money.
You take long or unpredictable trips. Intercity travel, or days where you genuinely do not know whether you will cover 40 km or 120 km, are where petrol’s five-minute refuelling is decisive. Range anxiety is much less of a problem than it used to be, but it has not disappeared.
Service access is thin where you live. Every town has someone who can fix a petrol scooter. That is not yet true for electric ones, particularly in tier-3 and tier-4 areas. Find your nearest electric service point before committing โ and consider how you would get a non-running scooter there.
You are buying used. The used electric market is immature, and assessing a used battery’s remaining health is difficult for an ordinary buyer. Used petrol scooters are a well-understood purchase with a known inspection process. Used electric is not there yet.
Where electric wins clearly
You ride 25 km a day or more. Past this point the numbers are not close. At 30 km a day the five-year advantage is over โน53,000 even after providing for a battery replacement.
You can charge at home overnight. This turns the main operational objection into a non-issue. You wake up full every day and never visit a fuel pump.
You ride mostly in city traffic. Electric motors deliver full torque from a standstill, which suits stop-start riding. Petrol scooters are least efficient in exactly the conditions where electric is at its best.
You value low maintenance. No oil changes, no spark plugs, no clutch, no air filter. Servicing is cheaper and less frequent. Brakes, tyres and suspension still need attention โ electric is not maintenance-free โ but the list is shorter.
You are sensitive to fuel price movements. Electricity tariffs move slowly and predictably. Petrol prices do not. Going electric substantially reduces your exposure to that.
The two things people get wrong
Overestimating range needs
Most buyers dramatically overestimate how much range they require, then pay a premium for a larger battery they never use.
Measure your actual daily distance for a week before shopping. Most urban commuters land between 20 and 35 km a day. A scooter with a claimed 120 km range delivers roughly 85โ95 km in real conditions โ which covers that comfortably, with margin for an unplanned trip.
Buying an extra 40 km of range you use twice a year is an expensive insurance policy.
Underestimating heat
This gets almost no attention and matters a great deal in India.
Battery chemistry comes in two main types. NMC offers more range per kilogram but starts experiencing thermal stress above roughly 40ยฐC and typically manages 1,000โ2,000 charge cycles. LFP is heavier for the same capacity but stays stable to around 60ยฐC and manages 3,000 or more cycles.
Across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, 40ยฐC is crossed routinely for months every year. If you live in one of those regions and park outdoors, this materially affects how much range you still have in year four โ and therefore whether that battery replacement provision becomes a real cost or a theoretical one.
Manufacturer warranties reflect the difference: LFP-based scooters commonly offer five years or 75,000 km, while NMC-based ones more typically warrant three years or 50,000 km.
Ask which chemistry you are buying. It is rarely volunteered.
A simple decision framework
Answer these in order. The first “no” is your answer.
1. Can you charge where you park, every night? No โ buy petrol, or commit properly to a removable-battery model.
2. Do you ride more than 15 km a day? No โ petrol is cheaper. Choose electric only if you want it for non-cost reasons.
3. Is there an electric service point within reasonable reach? No โ buy petrol. Service access outweighs running-cost savings.
4. Are your trips predictable and mostly under 60 km? No โ petrol’s refuelling speed is worth more to you than fuel savings.
All four yes? Electric is very likely the better financial and practical choice, and the advantage grows the more you ride.

Currently yes, though the gap is narrowing. Well-maintained petrol scooters from established brands have historically retained roughly 50โ60% of value after five years. Electric residuals are lower and still stabilising, largely because there is no standard way for a buyer to verify remaining battery health. Expect this to improve as battery health reporting becomes standardised.
Is electric worth it if I only ride 10 km a day?
Not on cost. At that usage this model shows petrol coming out roughly โน19,000 cheaper over five years. You might still prefer electric for the quietness, lower servicing hassle or emissions โ but it is not a money-saving decision at that distance.
What about the government subsidy?
Under PM E-DRIVE the incentive is โน2,500 per kWh capped at โน5,000 per vehicle, for scooters priced up to โน1.5 lakh ex-factory. The terminal date for electric two-wheelers is 31 July 2026, and the scheme is fund-limited so it can close earlier. Some states offer additional incentives and road tax waivers. Confirm current status before purchase.
Is servicing really cheaper on electric scooters?
Yes, but they are not maintenance-free. There is no oil, spark plug, clutch or air filter to deal with, so annual servicing typically costs less. Brakes, tyres, suspension and software updates still require regular attention.
